First Church has a wonderful opportunity to deepen relationships in our partnership with Community Emergency Services.  St Paul’s Lutheran Church, just across from St. Paul’s Home where First Church delivers groceries from the food shelf at CES on the 3rd Saturday of every month, is in the third year of an arts grant that has involved Phillips neighborhood residents in creating mosaics – if you drive through the neighborhood you have probably noticed the colorful mosaic planters in people’s front yards or the large scale mosaic that adorns one of the outside walls of Anderson Elementary School.    St Paul’s call these mosaics “seeds” or, in Spanish, “semillas” that go out into the community.

During the month of February, the mosaic workshop will move across the street to St Paul’s Home where residents will be creating mosaic mandalas to incorporate into planters, one of which will brighten their front yard.  We are invited to join in this creation on Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  A team of up to 6-8 people would be very helpful so there can be a 1:1 pairing with residents who may need some assistance with parts of the mosaic work.   It is most appropriate for middle school age and up but younger children can be incorporated if there is parental supervision and, we are assured, are a delight to the residents.  No special skills or artistic talents are needed — there will be a mini teaching session at the beginning of each workshop.

Several people from First Church have spoken recently of the growing sense of connection with the people at St. Paul’s Home to whom they deliver groceries.  Here is an opportunity to grow in relationship through working side by side to create something of beauty for the community.     We would especially like to have a team on February 18th to stay after the grocery delivery but it would be great to have people participate on the 11th and 25th as well.  Coffee and treats will be available; you can bring a bag lunch and join St. Paul’s Home workshop participants over lunch. If you are interested, please contact the church office so we can let St. Paul’s Lutheran Church know what to expect.
