First Church has established a columbarium to provide a permanent place on the church premises for the inurnment of the cremated remains of First Church members, friends and their families.
The columbarium is located in the rear of the sanctuary near the entry. It a group of compartments (niches) that contain the cremated remains (cremains) of the dead. Each niche can hold two urns. There is also a common space available in which cremains are at rest in one large group rather than being in individual urns. The columbarium provides a safe, theologically correct, and ecologically sound way to honor the dead. It also provides a quiet and comfortable place for family and friends to come, pray, and in other ways honor those who have passed on to eternal life.
At First Church, we seek to embrace the journey of faith from birth to death. The presence of the columbarium in our sanctuary connects us to a larger community of the faithful — to the “great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1), living and dead, that surrounds and inspires us. The columbarium allows us to support those engaged in the process of grieving, and to bear witness to the hope of the resurrection.
Families may make arrangements to visit the columbarium by contacting the church office. For a brochure and more information, please contact the church office.
